Health and safety is an important part of school life – keeping children and adult’s safe is an essential and important aspect in our teaching and learning environments.

Health and safety is an important part of school life – keeping children and adult’s safe is an essential and important aspect in our teaching and learning environments. Children should be able to experience a wide range of activities. Health and safety measures should help them to do this safely, not stop them. It is important that children learn to understand and manage risks that are a normal part of life. Common sense should be used in assessing and managing the risks of any activity. Health and safety procedures should always be proportionate to the risks of an activity.

The updated Health and Safety Standards document enclosed reflects this approach; confirming the LA’s commitment to the principles of sensible risk management as outlined by the Health and Safety Executive which applies a reasonable and proportionate approach to health and safety.

The document is in place to support headteachers and governing bodies to understand the minimum standards of health and safety expected by school leaders in the LA. This will ensure that responsibilities are fulfilled in compliance with statutory legislation and general duty of care in line with the LA’s health and safety policies and procedures. It is therefore important that both headteachers and governing bodies ensure that the requirements of these standards are implemented.

All relevant staff in school must also read and understand the requirements, particularly where it relates to specific health and safety responsibilities within their role. Implementation of the requirements set out in this document will indicate that your school is taking reasonable and proportionate steps to manage health and safety and minimise and control risks.

Should you have any further queries or questions regarding the content of this document, please do not hesitate to contact the LA’s Senior Health and Safety Advisor for People Group and Schools; Mark Wills on 01926 418070 email markwills@warwickshire.gov.uk or the Corporate Health, Safety and Wellbeing Manager; Ruth Wilkinson on 01926 412316 email ruthwilkinson@warwickshire.gov.uk

A safety conscious pupil who spotted potential fire hazards in his home has been presented with a certificate and £25 WHSmith voucher this week, during an assembly at Shottery St Andrews C of E Primary School.

The presentation was carried out by Community Fire Safety Officer, Andy Morgan who presented Jacob Hague with a certificate for taking part in Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Services’, Junior Fire Safety Champion Scheme.

The scheme, which has been running in Primary schools since September 2011 is delivered to all year 5 pupils and includes a talk on smoke alarms, kitchen and electrical safety and a night -time ‘turn it off’ routine. The sessions also include a hazard spotting exercise, where fire crews give pupils the information and skills to carry out a child-friendly home fire safety check.

Pupils are then asked to carry out a check in their family home, grandparents, neighbours, relatives or friends’ houses, checking key elements such as whether there is a working smoke alarm, if there are any electrical cables running under carpets or rugs and ensuring that there is only one plug used per socket.

Once complete, the young people have to hand in a completed assessment to the school and are awarded with a Junior Fire Safety Champion certificate. All assessments are then passed onto the fire service and the family can also request fire safety advice via the booklet.

As well as receiving a certificate, Jacob also received a £25 WHSmith gift voucher after being picked out of the monthly prize draw.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Schools Liaison Officer, Ruth Greenhalgh said:

“The aim of the Junior Fire Safety Champion Scheme is to educate young people about fire safety, electrical fire safety and how to stay safe in the home. When running the activities we ask pupils to actively engage in their learning by running through the home fire safety check assessment in their family home or with neighbours or grandparents.

“By completing the assessment, Jacob has shown just how much the scheme can benefit young people and their families, which is why we were so pleased to present him with a Junior Fire Safety Champion Certificate and prize.”

Rethink Mental Illness

Rethink Mental Illness

What is a mental health problem?

Mental health Problems cover a wide range of issues – including stress, anxiety depression and substance abuse – that affect someone’s ability to get on with their daily life. The most common mental disorder in Britain is mixed anxiety and depression, with almost 9% of people meeting the criteria for diagnosis*.

*Office for National Statistics Psychiatric Morbidity report (2001)

Why Mental health Problems affect us all

Early intervention can help slow down or stop a mental health problem and lead to faster recovery. However most of us know little about mental health. We often don’t spot the signs that someone else – or ourselves – is struggling until very late.

An MHFA course will teach you to recognise the early signs of a mental health problem, and give you the confidence and knowledge to help.

The financial cost of mental health problems is huge:

The overall cost of mental health problems in England stands at £105.2 billion a year, (taking into account care costs, sickness absence and unemployment).*

Stress, anxiety and depression are responsible for 70 million days sick leave every year.*

In 2003 research by the Sainsbury’s Centre for Mental Health showed that staff with mental illness not being supported cost UK businesses a total of £26bn per year – equivalent to £1,035 for every employee in the UK workforce.

For 2009/10 updated figures estimate that the cost to UK businesses is now £30.3 billion a year – equivalent to £1206 per employee.

* The Centre for Mental Health (2010)

What will I learn on an MHFA course?

An MHFA course will teach you to:

_ Spot the early signs of a mental health problem
_ Feel confident helping someone experiencing a problem
_ Provide help on a first aid basis
_ Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others
_ Help stop a mental illness from getting worse
_ Help someone recover faster
_ Guide someone towards the right support
_ Reduce the stigma of mental health problems

MHFA training is an intensive course, delivered over 2 days, aimed at those without specialist mental health training.

‘I have a much better understanding of how other people may be feeling.’
‘Given me confidence and more empathy towards mental health issues.’
‘In 13 years as a police officer I didn’t learn as much as I did in the last 2 days.’

Something Fun to do during the Half Term!

Something Fun to do during the Half Term!

The Elephant Bridesmaid has been written especially for children, with a particular focus on the theme of the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle.

The show has been produced by The People’s Theatre Company, an award winning organisation with over ten years experience of providing high quality theatre productions.

“There are no elephants in Australia. Well, no elephants except this one…”

The Elephant Bridesmaid is a magical musical about weddings and wombats and the loveliest elephant the world has ever known.

Covering themes that include the importance of friendship and the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – this delightful show has just the right balance of games, songs and confidence building interaction to feed your children’s imaginations and encourage their engagement with learning.

So join Nessie the elephant and her fantastic animal friends and help them as they go in search of an outfit fancy enough (and large enough) to make her the Australian jungle’s first and most beautiful Elephant Bridesmaid!
